fuck, I was there!
Not to take away from the MAIDEN tribute, I'm a big SCORPIONS fan and that was my first time seeing them and the lasting impression was Rudolf Schenker going Pete Townsend and swinging his Flying V almost every other song. Getting back to MAIDEN, they were solid also. I remember Dickenson ranting about the haters because of "Number Of The Beast" and it's satanic themes.
Ironic considering the timing of the unfortunate death of Kelly Johnson. The aforementioned two and GIRLSCHOOL would play a month or two later across the street at the Oakland Colesium Arena (and that kicked ass too!) Funny also that year, we stumbled into the Record Vault and those issues of Metal Mania was one of reasons that drew us in the shop as my friend bought that and the SCOPRIONS issue.
Shit, also that year, JUDAS PRIEST destroyed the Cow Palace for the "Screaming For Vengence" tour."
Damn, the good 'ole days _________________

That was a great read! I can't believe that was 25 years ago... I remember meeting up at my Friend Phil's house(RIP) I had just turned 12 as did my friends. Phil's Mom made sure we had a big meal before our epic Metal journey. I had just taken a bite of a hamburger and a swig of coke when one of my friends cracked a joke. a huge chunk of burger + coke shot through my nose as I was laughing so hard... painful to say the least.
Maiden killed! being 12 and seeing that giant Eddie... what can I say... fucking epic! Scorpions! Rudy swinging his V, tossing it 30 feet in the air then catching it... HUGE!
I hate to say it... but I wanted to see Foreigner as well.
during that horrid crap loverboy, my friends and I climbed up to the top seats in the stadium to smoke some nice green buds. as I'm taking a hit, I get tapped on the shoulder from behind... this old guy(like 70) wearing just shorts and his wife wearing shorts and a bikini top(not a pretty sight) are handing us a pipe with hash offering to trade hits... How fucking wrong is that!?! were 12 doing drugs with Grandma & Granpa hahahaha
the last thing I remember is Foreigner releasing a million balloons into the air... being stoned after seeing Maiden & the Scorps, watching the balloons fade into the distance was a beautiful thing. |

Great blog Umlaut!
WOW - one of my most memorable concerts. I was 16 and vividly remember Maiden and Scorps. I had purchased Killers at a record store on Irving St. because of the cover art - and, obviously, was blown away by the music.
Seeing Maiden live at Day on the Green was indeed epic!! - except for the dude that puked in his lap behind me - beer with hot dog chunks flowed out from under my seat - ecchhhh!!!
I still have the "Beast on the Road" tour book shown in Umlaut's link!!!!
I'm pretty sure the next Maiden appearance was for "Piece of Mind" at the Cow Palace - I drank too much Jack and did mushrooms - that show does not surface in the little gray cells as well... _________________ "Some bear the Cross, I wield the Hammer."

I was there. I was one of the first 10 people in line, waiting with Russell "Mister Hate" Kent and his girlfriend. When the gates opened and they let us in we SPRINTED for the front of the stage, where we were, pressed right against the barricade for Scorps and Maiden. Great memories. _________________ There are many here among us who feel that life is a joke and for you we sing this final song for you there is no hope sayonara suicide hari kari kamikaze you won't see another evening Goodbye http://www.theophanyrecords.com |
