I don't think LA is that bad. It just reminds me of San Jose, just bigger. _________________ Hellhunter |

The Bay Area is far superior with it's ecological diversity as well. LA has no Pt. Reyes, Big Sur or Mavericks. |
Another huge reason I need to be here, not there. Except that Big Sur, Mavericks, and Pt. Reyes don't even count as local in a way that matters to me. I need to have the hills right there. I've never lived more than a 30 minute walk from the hills. Right now, I'm about a 10 minute walk away from a fire road that you could follow through the woods all the way to Richmond, Castro Valley, etc.. This area is surrounded by parks. If it weren't for all the hills and escape routes from this place, I'd be insane. I'm not cut out for city living, having grown up in a tiny town. I'm also not able to live in a suburb, which because of the driving requirements, LA is, basically. A massive suburb surrounding a small, dead city. _________________ Your favorite nation sucks |

As a person who has lived between both locations my entire adult life, I will declare that IMHO, SF is a far more preferable place to be than anywhere in Southern California, for lots and lots of reasons. It comes down to whether you prefer truly urban life or pleasant weather. Yes, LA/socal has great weather, great music, great burritos (better than sf, btw), great lots of stuff. It does not have the kind of urban life you get in the bay area, and especially the city of sf. that's all there is to it.
|
"urban life in SF" = fielding panhandlers, stepping over poop, holding your breath, fucked up hair, a day's worth of supplies strapped to your back, social life directed by the transit authority
I have to pick So. Cal. I can't relate to this area. I could when i visited, I can't living. I don't care about anything people care about here. That is not to say I do in So. Cal but I do understand the lifestyle better.
The Bay Area is pretty crappy IMO. They must have great visitors bureau PR because it's really rotting and filthy and full of crime...but oh so lovely from a distance, I suppose to charge 5x as much as the aforementioned Bakersfield.
No offense to you who love it here but I feel fully temporary here...however long that is. |
That's too bad. It may paritially be a timing thing. I lived in SF for my 20s, during the 1990s, which was kind of a carefree time (at least for me).
But I still think that SF--if not the entire Bay Area (which is a different thing)--has a lot more to offer than anywhere I've spent in Socal (LA, OC, Long Beach, and SD). You can go from crazy, sleezed out weirdness at 4:00 am on Turk street, to rad underground metal, to elite wine bars, to the best sushi, etc. etc. And you can walk or cab everywhere. The fact is, SF is like and East Coast or European city, and down here in SoCal it just ain't like that. Although, I have to admit I have been thoroughly enjoying the spectacular weather lately. _________________ "Better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven't done" |

I've been saying the same thing about life in the bay area for 17 fargin years. I can't cut the cord and bail. The lifestyle, the job options, the climate seem to outweigh the negatives when it comes down to actually leaving. |

For the weather alone, I could deal with all of the negative aspects of either city. Though I think I would choose SF because as someone already said, the air in LA is toxic. That said, I've always enjoyed my time in LA. People are nice for the most part. |

Yeah. When I first read the title of the post, what stood out was the assumption that both places suck and that L.A. was worse. _________________ "Remember...in life, as in basketball, you gotta hit your free-throws" |

Um, no. LA sucks because of the rappers and the mexicans.

Unless, you've actually been there for a amount of time it makes it a little difficult to bitch about on how bad you may dislike what the place had to offer. And amount of time could could be a week or a month. But one day doesn't cut it with me. If you one bad experience in LA then it makes it a little hard to say L.A. Sucks unless if you were down there for a week or two and everyday sucked then that might support the arguement.
I lived in L.A. for 7 years (Late 84'-Late 91') North Long Beach,Hollywood, and South-East L.A. I went to a shitlaod of shows and not once did I ever go the Rainbow. I met Dino Cazares (Asesino, Fear Factory, Brujeria.) who I have known now 21 yrs., Used to watch Dark Angel practice, Abattoir, Bloodlust. Dave McClain (Machine Head- Sacred Reich) drummer as well Ross Robinson former gtrst. of Detente was Dino's Roommate. Every now and then I would see El Duce passed out near western ave or near the Cathay De Grande. And recently when I went down to the L.A. Murderfest all the movie theaters that I went to for a matinee/midnight
show. has closed. Now I don't mind visiting but I wouldn't live there.
SF might have a "class war" in the near future. But LA will most likely explode again like it did during the Watts riots and repeated it self during the Rodney King Affair. The tension is festering down there and it's just waiting to explode again. |

I think the two of you forgot to mention the white trash factor in the overall equation of LA's "suckiness". _________________ ...you're so cool, I'm going to call you culo. |
