How do I change my settings?
All your settings (if you are registered) are stored in the database. To alter them click the Profile link (generally shown at the top of pages but this may not be the case). This will allow you to change all your settings.
The times are not correct!
The times shown on the Earth-Dog site should be correct unless there is a glitch on the server which is very unlikely. However, what you may be seeing are times displayed in a timezone different from the one you are in. If this is the case, you should change your profile setting for the timezone to match your particular time zone or area. To read more about this topic and to find your specific time zone please visit this link; http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/info/timezone.htm Note that changing the timezone, like any setting, can only be done by registered users who are logged in.
I changed the timezone and the time is still wrong!
If you are sure you have set the timezone correctly and the time is still different, the most likely answer is daylight savings time (or summer time as it is known in the UK and other places). The board is not designed to handle the changeovers between standard and daylight time so during summer months the time may be an hour different from the real local time.
My language is not in the list!
English is currently the only language installed on the Earth-Dog Lounge. There are no plans to change that, but if enough people request the installation of a new language pack, it could happen. Highly unlikely though.

How do I show an image below my username?
In order to get a picture (called an Avatar) in your profile do the following;

1. Find or create your own picture. Don't use a picture that someone else on this board is already using.

2. Resize the picture (if needed) so it follows are allowed limits in size (101 pixels in width, 101 pixels in hight and no more than 9kb in filesize (this will most likely not be a problem unless it's an animated gif). Any image program can do this and it's usually very easy. Save the picture to a known location (something like C:\Documents and Settings\user\My documents\picture.gif or your desktop).

3. Upload the avatar/picture to the earth-dog server. Go to your profile (link in the meny in the top right corner) and scroll to the bottom where it says 'Avatar control panel'. In the 'Upload Avatar from your machine' box type path to the picture or just click 'browse' besides it and manually browse to where your picture is located (like your desktop). Click submit.

Note that if your picture is too big it won't be accepted. Also note that so-called remote linking (having your picture on another server and then typing in the URL) is not permitted on this board.

If you still have troubles contact one of the ancient ones and they'll do it for you.
How do I change my rank?
You cannot directly change the wording of any rank (ranks appear below your username in topics). The Earth Dog uses ranks to indicate the number of posts you have made and to identify certain users. For example editors, contributors, and administrators have special ranks. There are set ranks for all users with less than 666 posts, after that you might be eligible for a personal rank. Note that this is at the discretion of the moderators and not something you can crave, although it should be noted that so far no requests have been turned down.

When I click the email link for a user it asks me to log in.
Sorry, but only registered users can send email to people via the built-in email form (if the admin has enabled this feature). This is to prevent malicious use of the email system by anonymous users.
Why can't I log in?
First, in order to log in, you have to be registered at Earth-Dog! It's totally free and takes less than a minute.

If you are registered, but still can't login, ask yourself the following: have you defied any of the editors or admins (a.k.a. the Ancient Ones)? If repeatedly so you may have been banned (a message will be displayed if you have) but this is extremely rare at Earth-Dog as we have Rhino skin.

Did you mistype your username or password (please double or triple check - this is a common error)? Passwords are case sensitive, usernames are not.

Lastly, the board may be having a technical problem, though that is unlikely and you would most probably be informed of the difficulties we're having. If all else fails, contact the Ancient Ones, and they'll help you.

I've lost my password!
Don't panic! While your password cannot be retrieved it can be reset. Not even the admins (a.k.a. the Ancient Ones) have access to users passwords, they are encrypted in the database. To reset your password; go to the login page (lounge index) and click I've forgotten my password. Follow the instructions and you should be back online in no time. Before doing so you might wanna double check that you typed your password correctly, it is case sensitive. After logging in again you can change the password sent to you.
Why do I need to register at all?
You don't have to -- unless you want to post messages. Registration will also give you access to additional features not available to guest users, such as definable avatar images, private messaging, emailing to fellow users, etc. It only takes a few minutes to register, so we recommend you do so. Note that if you don't post something within a month your account will be automatically deleted. In other words; don't sign up if you don't plan to post.
I registered but cannot log in!
First check that you are entering the correct username and password (check the email you were sent when you first registered). Passwords are case sensitive, usernames are not. If you lost your password you can be sent a new one (see other section of this FAQ).

If both username and passord seems to be in order but you still can't log in, try contacting any of the admins (a.k.a. the Ancient Ones), and they'll be able to help you.

Your account may also have been deleted for some reason, you can check this by clicking the 'maggotlist' icon in the menu (where you will also see the exact spelling of your username). Maybe you defied the Ancient Ones?
Note that accounts with no posts will be deleted if they appear to be dead a month after registrating , ie, no posts have ever been made from the account. To avoid this problem, start by introducing yourself in the 'introduce yourself here' thread!
How do I prevent my username from appearing in the online user listings?
In your profile you will find an option Hide your online status; if you switch this on you'll only appear to board administrators or to yourself. You will be counted as a hidden user.
Why do I get logged off automatically?
If you do not check the Log me in automatically box when you log in, the board will only keep you logged in for a preset time. This prevents misuse of your account by anyone else. To stay logged in, check the box during login. This is not recommended if you access the board from a shared computer, e.g. library, internet cafe, university cluster, etc.

About Earth-Dog
What's this site about?
This is a justified question. The short answer is we don't even know ourselves, but our "slogan" paint a pretty vivid picture; Metal for Muthas - Gore for Ghouls!...

We've had everything from dog-show contestants and russian porno bots to nu-metal demo bands sign up here. And although everybody is free to sign up and discuss their views here (within reason) none of the above really fit in here.

Earth-Dog is a place to discuss and promote real metal of all varieties, everything from heavy rock to thrash, death and black metal to grindcore. We also have a movies forum where anything related to the silver or TV screen goes, although it could be noted that we have strong taste for blood... so enter freely and of your own will!

Earth-Dog was started as an EZboard by Electric Savage just for fun many years ago. Wretch, Lord Darkness, shootitinthehead and drtboi (among others) joined not long after and it radidly grew from there. We all met on various metal-related message boards although some of us knew each other from real life. There will soon be a more detailed biography of Earth-Dog but until then you know what you need to know, sign-up and start posting!

What are Maggots?
Maggots is another name for our users. We listened to some old Autopsy and Repulsion while doing our design and thought it had a better ring to it than user or, more specifically, member. It went well with our earth-theme as well as being related to both metal music and gore movies, something we treasure very dearly here at Earth-Dog.
Who are the Ancient Ones?
The Ancient Ones are the administrators and Moderators/Editors of this site. Most often when you're asked to contact an Ancient One it means an admin, currently Lord Darkness and drtboi.

Posting guidelines - Please READ THIS!
Before posting a message please make sure that you have at least glimpsed through the FAQ and read this particular section carefully. Come back often to make sure you're not missing out on updates. It's the only request we ask of you for all the efforts the many people have made to give you this site.

* When copying and pasting materials from other sites, please put the text within quote brackets. Type [quote] before you paste the text and [/quote] after it. Or simply mark your text and hit the Quote button. You get extra points for making sure the text is properly formated and brownie points for including links and pictures (which will not follow a copy'n'paste).

* If your post contains spoilers to plots in movies, TV or books or results to recent sports event you MUST use the spoiler feature. Just select the text or pictures with your mouse pointer and click the SPOILER button above the posting area. Or you can just manually put the [spoiler] and [/spoiler] tags around it like you do with any other type of BBcode.

* If your post contains anything that could be considered "not work safe" or repulsive to others, you MUST use the above Spoiler feature for it. If in doubt it's better to hide it than not, it only takes a click to reveal it.

* Don't engage in excessive flaming of other users. We have a very very high tolerance level here but keep it somewhat reasonable and make sure you're not limiting yourself to flaming exclusively because then we get bored and that's not a good thing for anyone.

* The nature of this board and the music we listen to very much fall within the realm of negativity. But don't dwell on it and don't be pussy about it. Nobody wants to hear your opinion if you are constantly bitching and moaning about everything -- all the time.

* Don't post excessive nonsense in threads. Again, we have a generally high tolerance here but if your post makes little or no sense to others than you or your closest friends, there is absolutely no point in posting it on a message board like Earth-Dog.

* Don't post threads or messages directed at a single person. Nobody wants to read that your friend should call you after work because you got that movie he or she asked for. Really, we mean it. We offer a free and convenient Private Messaging service and we suggest you use either that or the mail option if you don't wanna pick up the phone.

* Before posting a new thread, please take a minute to make sure you are posting in the right section. You can read 'where to post what' on the forum index as well as in this FAQ. It makes it easier to find a topic you are interesting in as well as less tedious to browse. The (unpaid) moderators of this site has little time or energy to spend on moving your topics around; so PLEASE get it right the first time and post your thread where it belongs (especially for those that belongs in the Black Market category).

* If you decide to leave us for whatever reason, please don't let the door hit you on your way out and please refrain from posting a dramatic goodbye letter. If you want to argue our rules you are free to do so (except those clearly listed as non-negotiable such as the Black Market rules). If you have ideas on how we can improve- by all means share them with us. If you are hurt and want to whine about it -- keep to yourself. Just leave if that is what you want to do, don't linger on it.

Where do I post what?
First read the different board descriptions, then browse thru the forums to get an idea. To further aid you to do right, here are a few examples:

If your post contains any info on single or multiple, past, present or future live shows, DJ events, radio shows, listening parties or venues post it in the LIVE WIRE section.

If your post contains any promotion for anything other than the above post it in THE BLACK MARKET section. Anything you are looking to buy or sell would also go here, even questions or discussions on record stores or web shops.

All general metal discussions go in the THE CHAMBER, such as opinions on bands or labels, news about record releases or questions about that release you've always heard about but never actually heard. You can discuss anything from Erik Rutan's forehead to Tom Araya's best era as a vocalist via what tuning Exodus should use on the new album (the answer is E). Again, don't get hurt if we disrespect your favourite band, we're not mean, we are only old-school!

All discussions regarding movies or television go into THE SCREENING ROOM.

Everything else, including meet and greet, books or magazines, sports, politics or any other general discussions go into THE LOBBY.

Failure to abide to these guidelines will first be met with harsh criticism and your thread being moved. Further failure to comply will result in locking or deletion of threads and even banning. So please take a few seconds to try and understand where we want what. If you still don't know where to post what ask any of The Ancient Ones and they'll gladly help you.

Why was my post edited or deleted?
Even though EDL appears to be public forum, in actuality, it is a private forum. We reserve the right to edit or delete any posts/threads or remove any users at any given time for any reason. EDL was started and funded (out of pocket) to be a place to for people to openly discuss their interests and we will not tolerate deliberate, un-necessary, immature flaming. If your thread was removed you might find it in the trash-can section for a limited time. The first thing you should do after having found your post edited, moved or even deleted is to make sure it followed the "posting guidelines" listed in this FAQ (see above). In other words BEFORE commenting the edit publicly or privately to a moderator - make sure you nailed the guidelines to the T. Even then, we reserve the right to moderate this board according the wishes of The Ancient Ones.

What's your policy on marketing/promotion?
The Earth-Dog Lounge is a great place to reach a targeted audience interested in merchandise or services pertaining to music, movies or even broader areas.

We give you this excellent opportunity for free. In return we ask you to follow two simple rules;

1. Please post what you are offering or promoting in the section called The Black Market. It is mentioned loud and clear not only on the forum index page but in many places in this FAQ as well in countless threads throughout the message board. In other words if you promote something in a section other than The Black Market we assume you either didn't spend the slightest amount of time trying to figure out where to post your topic or knowingly broke this rule and we simply does not tolerate that. We want to spend as little time moderating this board as possible and having to move topics despite having clearly stated where it belongs makes us VERY cranky.

2. What you are promoting should be of relevance to our members. Don't post anything until you have a firm idea exactly what that means as there is no point in trying to promote something to someone who isn't remotely interested in what you are offering. It really is that simple and you don't have to make it into anything other than that.

If the above 2 rules doesn't suit you, please don't bother telling us about it. Out of the very few rules we have here, most even open for discussion, these two rules are NOT debatable and we are NOT interested in your opinion about them.

There, this was a long and tedious FAQ entry for such a simple and to-the-point topic but we hope that at least now it leaves no room for error.

What's your policy on posting offensive stuff?
If you make a thread or post that containing something that could be offensive to others, we ask that you preface the thread title with the string [XXX] and/or use the SPOILER button/tag in the post. That way users will know the images or such within are not work-friendly and will wait until they get home (or the boss goes for lunch) to read the topic or watch the post in question.

Not that you don't know, but potentially eye-burning images include nudity (you know, titties, butts, penises or vulvas). Also, things like that weight lifter guy who's intestines are coming out his asshole - same thing goes for that. Or train wreck victims, japanese couples having fun in the bathtub, animal cruelty (which we have a VERY low tolarnce for and should ONLY be posted in a suitable context), mobsters who have been "taken for a ride"... you see what we're saying.

Should you post them, they require the [XXX] preface to the thread subject in the following fashion;
[XXX] Look at this picture I found!

Always use the [spoiler] tag inside the post for anything that falls in this category.

What's your policy on illegal downloads?
We don't have one. Each and every member have their own opinions and Earth-Dog does not state an official stance on this matter. However; using Earth-Dog to spread intellectual property is not allowed -- for obvious reasons. In other words posting links to such downloads is not allowed here.
What can I put in my signature?
First of all know that these rules exist with the sole purpose of being beneficial to all of mankind. Well, at least those of us that hang out at the Earth-Dog Lounge. Be a team player and follow these simple guidelines;

The maximum number of characters you can have in your signature is 275 including those needed for links etc.

You cannot put pictures (or animated gifs) in your signature. The exception to this rule, however, are graphical banners (even animated) in your signature as long as it doesn't break any of the general Earth-Dog policies and/or is annoying to watch (as in flashing with bright colors or similar). The banner can be maximum 46860 pixels big in either direction. PLEASE take a second to make sure your banner fit within those limits. This exception to the "no images in signatures" rule is here solely for the benefit of members wishing to use Earth-Dog to promote their band or business for free. So we ask in return that you keep it restricted to the above limits which are generally accepted throughout cyberspace as a set standard.

We strongly suggest you wrap your signature text with text size BBcode between 8-10 in size. In other words start with [size=9] then write your signature text and finish off with a [/size]. So far this is only a strong suggestion but this might change in the future so beware.

Failure to comply to these few easy rules will result in the retraction of your signature privileges.

I have received a spamming or abusive email from a user on Earth-Dog!
We are sorry to hear that. You should email any of the board administrators (a.k.a. the ancient ones) with a full copy of the email you received and it is very important this include the headers (these list details of the user that sent the email). They can then take action if, in fact, something fishy was going on. Note that the e-mail form feature of Earth-Dog is currently disabled, so any mail you get are from members directly. If you want to keep your e-mail address hidden from other users you can easily set that option in your profile.
Whom do I contact about abusive and/or legal matters related to this board?
You should contact either Lord Darkness, drtboi or Electric Savage (most often referred to as the ancient ones but also administrators, admins or just simply moderators) in all such matters. Before doing so you should be aware that we only take action against what is directly connected to this site and it's policies.

phpBB, posting, formatting and other technical issues
Who wrote this bulletin board?
This software (in its unmodified form) is produced, released and is copyrighted phpBB Group. It is made available under the GNU General Public License and may be freely distributed; see link for more details. It has been heavily modified by Lord Darkness to serve the evil agenda of the Earth-Dog crew.
What are Administrators?
Administrators are people assigned the highest level of control over the entire board. These people can control all facets of board operation which include setting permissions, banning users, creating usergroups or moderators, etc. They also have full moderator capabilities in all the forums. The Administrators (or admins in short) are often referred to as the Ancient Ones here at Earth-Dog although in reality only 2 of the 5 or so Ancient Ones are currently Administrators here; Lord Darkness and drtboi.
What are Moderators or Editors?
The Editors are basically what we call the Moderators of this site. Their main function is to post content in a specific field, but they also have the power to edit, delete, lock, move and split topics in the forum they moderate.
Where are the usergroups?
If you're familiar with phpBB you might wonder where the usergroups are here at Earth-Dog; We have decided not to use public usergroups here. If this policy changes or you are invited to a private one we will let you know when and how you can join them.
Why isn't X feature available?
This software was written by and licensed through phpBB Group. If you believe a feature needs to be added then please visit the phpbb.com website and see what the phpBB Group has to say. Please do not post feature requests to the board at phpbb.com, as the Group uses sourceforge to handle tasking of new features. Please read through the forums and see what, if any, our position may already be for features and then follow the procedure given there.

Also note that the Earth-Dog template has added a few features not available in the vanilla ("default") installation. More importantly a few other features have been stripped.
Why can't I vote in polls?
Only registered users can vote in polls so as to prevent spoofing of results. If you have registered and still cannot vote then you probably do not have appropriate access rights.
Why can't I access a forum?
Some forums may be limited to certain users or groups. To view, read, post, etc. you may need special authorization which only the forum moderator and board administrator can grant, so you should contact them.
What is BBCode?
BBCode is a special implementation of HTML. Whether you can use BBCode is determined by the administrator. You can also disable it on a per post basis from the posting form. BBCode itself is similar in style to HTML: tags are enclosed in square braces [ and ] rather than < and > and it offers greater control over what and how something is displayed. For more information on BBCode see the guide which can be accessed from the posting page. Except for , strike through text, you cannot use HTML tags directly in the Earth-Dog Lounge.
How do I post a new topic?
Easy! Click the 'new topic' button on either the lounge index or in any of the threads. You need to be registered (and be logged in) before you can post a message. This is how the 'new topic' icon looks like;

The facilities available to you are listed at the bottom of the forum and topic screens (the 'You can post new topics' etc. list).
How do I add a signature to my post?
To add a signature to a post you must first create one; this is done via your profile. To see the Earth-Dog policies regarding signatures see here:
http://www.earth-dog.com/lounge/faq.php#9

Once created you can check the Add Signature box on the posting form to add your signature. You can also add a signature by default to all your posts by checking the appropriate radio box in your profile. You can still prevent a signature being added to individual posts by un-checking the add signature box on the posting form.
How do I create a poll?
Creating a poll is easy -- when you post a new topic (or edit the first post of a topic, if you have permission) you should see a Add Poll form below the main posting box. You should enter a title for the poll and then at least two options -- to set an option type in the poll question and click the Add option button. You can also set a time limit for the poll, 0 being an infinite amount. There limit to the number of options you can list is 25.
How do I edit a post?
Only Earth-Dog admins or editors (a.k.a. the Ancient Ones) can edit posts other than their own.
You can edit your own posts by clicking the edit button for the relevant post. This is how the 'edit' icon looks like;

If someone has already replied to the post, you will find a small piece of text output below the post when you return to the topic that lists the number of times, date and time that you edited it. This will not appear if no one has replied; it also will not appear if the Ancient Ones edit the post, although they might (or might not) leave a short message saying they did so.
How do I delete a post?
Users (a.k.a. Maggots) can delete their own posts unless someone has replied to it. Only Earth-Dog admins (a.k.a. the Ancient Ones) can delete such posts. This is how the 'delete' icon look like;

You can always contact an Ancient One to let them know you want one of your own posts deleted (and preferably why). Until they do you can edit the post with a short message saying it should be deleted, but please keep in mind that all replies to your post will be affected negatively by this. If someone has quoted your post there has to to be special circumstances for an Ancient One to edit it out.
How do I edit or delete a poll?
As with posts, polls can only be edited by the original poster, a moderator, or board administrator. To edit a poll, click the first post in the topic, which always has the poll associated with it. If no one has cast a vote then users can delete the poll or edit any poll option. However, if people have already placed votes only moderators or administrators can edit or delete it; this is to prevent people rigging polls by changing options mid-way through a poll
Back to top
How do I post Images?
To display the image use [img] tag. You need to have the URL/link to the image in order to post it on Earth-Dog.

There is currently no facility for uploading images directly to this board. Should you need to we might be able to host them for you, but it's usually better if you can host it at a site like imageshack.us.

You cannot link to pictures stored on your own computer nor to images stored behind authentication mechanisms such as Hotmail or Yahoo mailboxes, password-protected sites, etc.
I cannot send private messages!
There are two possible reasons for this; you are not registered and/or not logged on or the board administrator has prevented you individually from sending messages. If it is the latter case you should try asking the ancient ones why.
What are Sticky topics?
Sticky topics appear below any announcements in viewforum and only on the first page. They are often quite important so you should read them where possible. Only the Ancient Ones as well as Moderators can post stickies.
What are Locked topics?
Locked topics are set this way by the forum moderator. You cannot reply to locked topics and any poll contained inside is automatically ended. Topics may be locked for many reasons, but with our laid back attitude at Earth-Dog it's most likely that the lock was due to a double post (rather than any moral purposes). In the case of a double post a link to the older thread is usually posted at the end of the locked one. The thread could then be left to rot in the Earth-Dog archives or simply be trashed, never to be seen again.

What are Announcements?
Announcements appear at the top of every page in the forum to which they are posted. Only The Ancient Ones can post an announcement, which by proxy means that the information therein is very important and interesting, so please make sure you read these as soon as you see them.
